Explanation of the Name Norodom Palace
Since the Palace is located at the head of Norodom Boulevard (now Le Duan Street), it is also known as Norodom Palace. Norodom is named after King Norodom of Cambodia.
The reason for this is that Emperor Napoleon III of France favored King Norodom of Cambodia. In addition to naming the Governor's Palace Norodom, Napoleon III also presented Norodom with an art nouveau-style building built within the Phnom Penh Royal Palace in 1876.
In addition to Norodom Palace, the Independence Palace is also known by various other names, each of which represents a different period in the Palace's history.
