In the central staircase area, there is still a large circular carpet that was placed here before 1975. The red carpet is round, with the image of dragons and phoenixes around it, and the Chinese word “longevity” embroidered in the center of the carpet, symbolizing the Republic of Vietnam regime as a large sun, a symbol of the eternal existence of the Republic of Vietnam.

The central staircase area cannot be moved through today because of the event of Lieutenant Pilot Nguyễn Thành Trung bombing the Independence Palace, damaging the central staircase area of the Palace.
