After capturing the six provinces of Cochinchina in 1868, the French administration began designing and constructing a mansion in central Saigon to serve as the residence of the Governor of Cochinchina. The construction was initiated by the French governor of southern Vietnam, La Grandière, on February 23, 1868, and was completed three years later.
