The Rooftop

On the rooftop, there is also the President's UH1 helicopter used for travel when needed. Next to it are two round marks indicating the positions of the two bombs dropped by pilot Nguyễn Thành Trung that hit the roof in 1975.

The rooftop is also known as: "Tứ phương vô sự lâu" (The Tower of Peace on All Sides) or "Lầu tĩnh tâm" (The Tower of Tranquility) - the highest floor of the Independence Palace.

According to architect Ngô Viết Thụ's idea, this space is for the head of state to find peace of mind and tranquility to think before important decisions, and to examine his conscience after each action related to the fate of the country. However, Nguyễn Văn Thiệu, when he was President, turned the Tower of Tranquility into a bar, which was used to hold parties with a capacity of 100 guests. The dance floor was made of Red Doussie wood, the stage for the band was made of Giant Crape-myrtle wood. The floor is surrounded by 12mm tempered glass. At 11:30 am on April 30, 1975, at the flagpole in front of the building, the puppet government’s flag was pulled down and replaced by the flag of the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam.
