Axial Symmetry
Axial symmetry—the balance of two sides—is a defining characteristic of Chinese architecture. According to the Yin-Yang and Five Elements theory, balance is a fundamental concept in Chinese philosophy. Therefore, axial symmetry serves as a perfect representation of the harmony between Yin and Yang.
In the Forbidden City, the most important palaces are located along the central north-south axis, while other structures are symmetrically arranged on either side of this central axis. The buildings and palaces within the Forbidden City are designed in parallel symmetry, with gates and halls also aligned symmetrically along the north-south axis.
This architectural style not only symbolizes the absolute power of the emperor but also reflects the stability and strength of imperial rule.
