The Forbidden City was built in an area prone to earthquakes. Its wooden columns are placed on stone bases rather than being embedded directly into the ground. This design allows the columns to move and vibrate freely, thus  preventing the structures of the palaces and buildings from breaking or collapsing during earthquakes, ensuring their long-term stability.
