The Forbidden City Ceases to Be China’s Political Center (1912)

After Emperor Puyi’s abdication in 1912, the Forbidden City was no longer the political heart of China. However, under an agreement between the Qing imperial family and the newly established Republic of China, Puyi was allowed—and even required—to continue living in the Forbidden City.

 

As opposition to Puyi’s continued residence grew, tensions escalated during the rule of the Beiyang Government of the Republic of China.
