Tiger Cage System
In the Museum, there is an original iron door from Côn Đảo prison, cast by the French colonialists and brought from France to install for the prison system in Con Dao. The iron door was later supported by the Côn Đảo Provincial Committee to be brought back to the Museum for display for the purpose of introducing Côn Đảo prison as well as the tiger cage system.
The barbed wire tiger cage is one of the most barbaric inventions that the US-Ngụy (i.e puppet) regime created to torture prisoners in Phú Quốc prison. The tiger cage is surrounded by a system of barbed wire designed to be narrow, with many layers of barbed wire, so that as soon as a prisoner moves or changes position, they will be stabbed by the barbed wire. The barbed wire tiger cages were built completely outdoors, in addition to detaining prisoners, they were also used to sunbathe prisoners.
Chuồng Cọp (i.e Tiger Cage) is also the name of the detention camp built to detain high-ranking political prisoners of the Việt Minh, the Liberation Army. It was built with a
corridor in the middle for prison guards to walk along, with the aim of torturing prisoners such as throwing lime powder or pouring dirty water on them. The Tiger Cage area is the most severe solitary confinement area, with very poor sanitation and food conditions, and frequent torture and interrogation. This area is for important prisoners who refuse to confess, with the aim of subduing the prisoners' will. In addition, there are rooms without roofs called sunbathing rooms, which are used to torture by sunbathing, rainbathing prisoners.
