History of the City Post Office
After the French successfully conquered Saigon, the French wanted to build a modern communication system, so they built the Saigon Telegraph Office, which was the predecessor of the current Central City Post Office.
The Saigon Telegraph Office was designed and inaugurated in 1863 by architect Gustave Eiffel (the designer of the famous Eiffel Tower in France and the Statue of Liberty in the US). However, due to the increasing demand for postal services from the people, the telegraph office was often overloaded. To limit this situation, in 1886, the French rebuilt the building based on a part of the original Telegraph Office. The building was redesigned by architect Villedieu and his assistant Foulhoux, and is also called the Saigon Wire Office to establish a communication system, located in the heart of the city.
After the Post Office building was completed, it was not only used for telegraph services but also for telephones. In 1894, the telephone was first used in Vietnam and the first place was Saigon.
