Outside Notre Dame Cathedral in Saigon
Opposite the main clock is a flower garden, with a monolithic statue of the Virgin Mary or the Virgin of Peace made of precious marble. This statue was brought from Rome and placed on the old foundation - where the statue of Bishop Adran (Bá Đa Lộc) once stood, leading Prince Cảnh.
This statue was ordered from Rome, Italy, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Feast of the Virgin Mary. The statue is 7.2m high and weighs 8 tons, standing upright on a globe holding a cross, eyes fixed on the sky as if praying for peace in Vietnam and the world. The Virgin Mary's feet trample on the head of the serpent (now, the head of the serpent has lost its upper jaw). In Christianity, the Virgin Mary is the one who gave birth to Jesus Christ, representing good, saving humanity, and the serpent symbolizes Satan, representing evil.
Therefore, the statue of the Virgin Mary standing on the head of the serpent also symbolizes peace defeating evil.
If you look from above, you will see that Notre Dame Cathedral has the shape of a cross because it is built in the Basilica style (basilica) consisting of a large central nave, a long cross-shaped floor plan 93m long, a semi-circular apse and 5 small chapels.
Another special detail about Notre Dame Cathedral is that all the building materials are imported from France such as bricks, tiles, steel, stained glass... The entire surface of the architectural structure of Notre Dame Cathedral is built with exposed bricks and green stone, without plaster, and still retains its pink color to this day.
