Architecture of Notre Dame Cathedral in Saigon

Notre Dame Cathedral is considered a symbol of the city because of the beauty it brings, this beauty is the combination of many different architectural styles, the harmonious combination of East-West architecture gives the work the feeling of both the modern West and the ancient East.

In terms of Western architectural style, it is a unique blend of Romanesque architectural style through the use of square and strong pillars. In addition, the archetypal characteristic of this style is the arch structures that were very popular in the Roman Empire appear densely on windows, main doors and exterior decorations of the church.

The Romanesque style is also clearly expressed through the semi-circular apse and 5 small chapels behind. Because the Romanesque architectural style is the main style that appears in Eastern European regions, which have cold climates, houses are often built with very thick walls to keep the building warm.

In combination is the Gothic architectural style, which is expressed through the sharp spires of the church, the high columns to receive light from the outside and the rose windows.

These are characteristics which can be found in all the major Gothic cathedrals in northern France.

The walls are decorated with 56 stained glass windows depicting characters or events in the Bible, 31 round rose windows, 25 ox-eye windows made of colored glass assembled together with very beautiful images. Unfortunately, out of the 56 stained glass windows in Notre Dame Cathedral in Saigon, only 4 are intact as before. The other doors were remade around 1949 to replace the original ones that were broken during World War II.

In addition, the bell tower and the zinc tower of the church are also characteristic of the Gothic architectural style here.

We can also see that Eastern architecture is also combined through the yin and yang tiled roofs, fish scale tiles on the roof of the church.
