Story About Saint Peter

Saint Peter (Simon Peter) was originally named Simon, the son of Jonah, and was a fisherman from Bethsaida and Capernaum on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Together with his brother Andrew, he earned his living by fishing. During one encounter, Jesus called him to follow Him and changed his name to Cephas (an Aramaic word meaning “rock”), which in Greek is translated as Petros; from then on, he became known as Peter.

From the very beginning, Peter emerged as one of Jesus’ closest disciples. He witnessed many significant events, including the raising of Jairus’ daughter, the Transfiguration on the mountain, and Jesus’ agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. Throughout his spiritual journey, Saint Peter stood out as a strong and outspoken figure—sometimes impulsive, occasionally weak in faith, yet deeply loyal and often acting as the spokesperson for the apostles.

When Jesus asked, “Who do you say that I am?” , Peter confessed, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” In response, Jesus made a promise to him: “On this rock I will build my Church, and I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven.” Nevertheless, Peter also experienced profound failure when he denied Jesus three times on the night of His arrest, an act for which he later repented deeply. After the Resurrection, Jesus asked Peter three times, “Do you love me?” , and entrusted him with the mission: “Feed my sheep.”

After Pentecost, Peter became the leader of the early Christian community. He boldly proclaimed the Gospel, performed many miracles in the name of Jesus, and took part in the Council of Jerusalem, where it was affirmed that Gentiles were also to be welcomed into the Church. According to Church tradition, Peter later traveled to Rome, preached the Gospel there, and was martyred during the reign of Emperor Nero. He was executed by crucifixion, but requested to be crucified upside down, believing himself unworthy to die in the same manner as his Lord.

The place of his burial became a site of great veneration among the faithful, and Saint Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City was later built directly over his tomb. In the Catholic Church, Saint Peter is regarded as the first Pope, the “keeper of the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven,” the foundation of the Church, and the chief of the Apostles, honored throughout the global Christian faith.
